Swindon’s STEAM Museum proudly presents its latest special exhibition, ‘Girls on Film – a snapshot of women on the railways,’ offering an intriguing glimpse into the changing roles of women in the railway industry.
Open to the public since 22nd July, this captivating display features a collection of images from STEAM’s exceptional photographic archives.

The exhibition delves into the early 1900s when only a handful of women held positions in the railway sector, mostly confined to traditional roles such as telephone exchange operators or laundry attendants. Through a thoughtfully curated selection of photographs, the display chronicles the gradual expansion of employment opportunities for women. Notable figures, including Vera Bray, who made significant strides at Cardiff Station, and Jayne Clarke, featured in a pioneering publicity campaign at Swindon Works, take the spotlight.
Admission to the ‘Girls on Film’ exhibition is complimentary for visitors who have already purchased tickets to the STEAM Museum. Additionally, the museum is also taking part in the ‘Kids for a Quid’ offer, running until 3rd September.
Families can enjoy this fantastic deal, with up to four children (aged three to fifteen) gaining entry to either STEAM Museum for just £1 each when accompanied by a full-paying adult.
Swindon Museums Manager, Frances Yeo, said: “Our exhibitions for 2023 showcase how railways and the GWR in particular opened-up roles for women. Our fabulous photographic collection has so many great images and to be able to show so many which demonstrate women working for the GWR is fantastic.”
Councillor Marina Strinkovsky, Cabinet Member for Heritage, Art, and Culture at Swindon Borough Council, commends the exhibition’s celebration of women’s role in shaping the GWR’s growth.
“Women’s influence on the development of industry and technology is a fascinating topic, and the museum team has done a great job of curating this exhibition about it. I’m really looking forward to hearing people’s thoughts and impressions from their visit,” she said.
“If you’re looking for things to do over the summer holidays, STEAM will definitely have something for you!”
With the summer holidays in full swing, STEAM promises an array of enriching activities for all ages. The museum welcomes visitors Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sundays from 11 am to 4 pm. The last entry is one hour before closing time.
