Calling All Local Community Groups: Apply for Life-Saving Defibrillator Funding

In a bid to enhance emergency response and save lives, the UK government has launched an initiative inviting community groups to apply for funding to purchase a defibrillator (AED).

The £1 million Community Automated External Defibrillators Fund aims to bolster the availability of AEDs in public spaces where they are most needed.

With the potential to provide around 1000 new defibrillators, this funding comes with a unique opportunity for community spaces like local parks, post offices, and community centres to equip themselves with life-saving technology.

The primary focus of the grant award is to ensure that the defibrillators are strategically placed in areas with high footfall, vulnerable populations, rural regions, or locations with specific types of activities that may necessitate quick access to emergency medical equipment.

Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Steve Barclay, said: We know, through inspiring stories of ordinary people, being kept alive thanks to the swift use of a defibrillator in public, that these extraordinary devices must be accessible to all.

“I urge any organisation that may benefit from a defibrillator – whether you’re a sports club, local theatre, or community hall – to register your interest for this fund so that we can get more of this life-saving technology placed around England.”

Professor Sir Stephen Powis, National Medical Director for NHS England, highlights the significance of quick and effective intervention during cardiac emergencies. “When someone goes into cardiac arrest it’s crucial that they are given effective CPR and quick defibrillation to restart their heart. This new fund is a great opportunity for grassroots organisations to ensure that their community has access to lifesaving equipment in their moment of need,” he said.

The Department of Health and Social Care will invest the funding through an independent partner chosen from the government’s approved list of suppliers.

Groups looking to obtain funding for defibrillators can register their expressions of interest online to stay informed about grant application openings.
