Budget Proposal Approved to Enhance Wiltshire Police Services

Wiltshire Police is set to receive additional funding to enhance crucial policing services following a decisive vote of eight to two in favour of endorsing Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Wilkinson’s budget.

The county’s Police and Crime Panel, comprising councillors from Swindon and Wiltshire representing various political affiliations, lent their support to the budget during a morning session yesterady.

This endorsement will result in a 5.2% increase in the policing precept in Wiltshire, translating to an additional £1.09 per month or £13 annually for the average Band D property.

Included in the budget is provision for the redevelopment of Wiltshire Police Headquarters in Devizes and the establishment of a new policing hub in the southern part of the county, aligning with the PCC’s estates strategy, which envisions a more accessible and visible policing service for residents.

Furthermore, the budget builds upon achievements from the previous year, including a fourfold improvement in positive outcomes for Rape and Serious Sexual Offences, and Wiltshire Police’s emergence as one of the top-performing forces nationally in disrupting county lines per capita.

Speaking to the panel, Mr Wilkinson acknowledged the financial challenges faced by residents but highlighted the public’s backing for the increase, with 85% of respondents to his recent “Policing, Priorities and ££s” survey expressing a desire for greater investment in policing.

He stated, “The decision to raise the precept has been a tough yet necessary one. I am attentive to residents’ calls for an enhanced service from both the police and the wider criminal justice system, with improved outcomes and increased visibility.”

Mr Wilkinson emphasised the ongoing need for improvement amidst evolving crime trends, noting the funding gap of £2.4 million despite the modest increase in the precept. However, he expressed confidence in the ability of both the Chief Constable and himself to deliver a policing service capable of addressing the ever-changing crime landscape and meeting future challenges.
