Recent data from the RAC has revealed that British motorists were hit hard by a 7p per litre increase in the average petrol price during the month of August. This surge marks the most significant monthly rise in more than two decades.
The average diesel prices rose 8p per litre, ranking as the sixth-largest increase within the same timeframe.
According to the RAC, these price hikes can be attributed to a sudden spike in oil costs. Oil prices have steadily risen by nearly $12 per barrel since July, nearly reaching the $87 mark, largely due to a reduction in supplies by the Opec+ production group.
Commenting on these developments, RAC’s spokesperson for fuel, Simon Williams, remarked, “August came as a significant shock to drivers, who had become accustomed to much lower prices compared to the record highs witnessed last summer.”
He further stated, “Witnessing a rapid increase of 6-7p per litre at the pump, resulting in £4 or more added to the cost of a full tank within just a few weeks, is particularly frustrating, especially for those who cover extensive mileage or own older, less fuel-efficient vehicles.”
