Bristol Airport Unveils Major Hand Luggage Rule Changes After £11.5 Million Security Upgrade

A significant change is coming to Bristol Airport’s hand luggage rules, marking the first major alteration in 15 years, thanks to a substantial investment in new security scanners.

Thanks to an £11.5 million investment in new security scanners, from 14 June 2024, travellers will enjoy a smoother and more efficient security process, as a range of previously prohibited items will now be permitted in hand luggage.

The revised security procedures will now require passengers to keep all items, including liquids up to 330ml, in their hand luggage bags, leave mobile phones and electronic devices in their bags, empty their pockets into their bags, and empty the contents of metal water bottles.

Shaun Jones of Swindon Travel Hub hailed the news, stating, “This is fantastic for travellers. The new rules will undoubtedly speed up the security process at Bristol Airport, making the whole experience more pleasant and less stressful.”

This significant security upgrade is part of a broader effort by Bristol Airport to enhance passenger experience. The airport is investing over £400 million in a new public transport interchange, additional multi-storey car parks, and expanded retail and catering areas.

Graeme Gamble, Chief Operating Officer at Bristol Airport, commented on the upgrade: “We are delighted all customers travelling from Bristol Airport will benefit from state-of-the-art technology being introduced at security. The new equipment will reduce customer stress and inconvenience as the need for 100ml liquids to be placed in clear, plastic bags and removed from hand baggage will no longer be required.

“The new process delivers a much more customer-friendly security operation using the latest technology and providing enhanced screening, allowing customers to keep personal items in their hand luggage.

“We’ve invested over £11.5 million in the security equipment enhancements, and as with all complex and large-scale projects in a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week operation, we needed to have a phased approach to the introduction of the new equipment and processes. However, customers should be reminded there are no immediate changes to the rules governing what can be taken through security as a result of this initiative, and the current hand luggage restrictions remain in place until 14 June 2024.”
