Bravery of Victims Praised as Michael Barker Found Guilty of Child Sex Offences

The courage of four survivors has been praised after a man was finally brought to justice for a series of child sex offences spanning more than two decades.

Michael Barker, 71, now of Albert Hill in Durham, was found guilty at Swindon Crown Court this week of nine child sex offences – including two rapes, six counts of indecent assault and one of gross indecency with a child.

The offences took place between 1974 and 1997 at several addresses in Swindon, Chippenham, and Bishop Auckland. Barker’s victims were all young girls known to him, who trusted him and were targeted in the very places they should have been safest.

Detective Constable Nicola Ainsley, who led the investigation, spoke after the verdict.
“Firstly, I want to acknowledge the incredible bravery of the victims,” she said. “They have endured unimaginable trauma but still found the strength to come forward and report Barker’s actions. This result shows that no matter how much time has passed, it’s never too late to seek justice.”

She added: “Barker is an abhorrent man. He abused his position of trust, robbing his victims of their childhoods and peace of mind. Even when faced with the evidence, he continued to deny everything, forcing his victims to relive their ordeals in court. I can only hope this guilty verdict brings them a sense of closure and the chance to move forward.”

Barker will be sentenced at a later date.
