Boris urges people to shop normally and says UK won’t face disruption to food supplies

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has used this afternoons Downing Street briefing to urge people to shop in their normal way as there ‘should not be disruption to food supplies.’

After countries started to imposed a ban on travel to and from the UK, including lorry drivers taking freight into France, Mr Johnson advised that supplies of the vast majority of food, medicines and other supplies were coming into the country ‘as normal’ and people should not panic.

He said: ‘It’s vital first to stress that these delays occurring at Dover only affect human-handled freight and that is only 20% of the total arriving from or departing to the European continent.

‘The vast majority of foods are coming and going as normal.

‘You may also be aware, in fact I’d be amazed if you weren’t, that the Government has been preparing for a long time for exactly this kind of event.’

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said there were currently 174 lorries queueing on the motorway, down from around 500 last night, with some others in a holding area in Kent and that the delays were the equivalent to that caused by strikes or severe weather.
