Award-Winning Homebuilding Visitor Centre Launches Retrofit Zone to Help Homeowners Cut Bills

The National Self Build & Renovation Centre (NSBRC) has officially opened its inspiring new Retrofit Zone — a hands-on, educational exhibit designed to help homeowners understand exactly how to upgrade their properties for greater comfort, efficiency, and sustainability.

Located just off the M4 corridor near Swindon, the NSBRC’s latest addition is set to become a must-visit destination for homeowners, tradespeople, local authorities, educators, and sustainability professionals interested in making homes healthier, cheaper to run, and kinder to the planet.

The launch, held on Friday 7 November, was officially opened by Sarah Gibson MP, just hours after the centre was named ‘Sustainable Business of the Year’ at the Business Exchange Awards 2025 — a recognition of its continued leadership in sustainable construction and innovation.

Hands-On Learning for a Greener Future

The Retrofit Zone showcases life-size cross-sections of homes from different eras, illustrating the unique energy challenges each faces — and how to solve them. The immersive display focuses on a ‘fabric-first’ approach, showing how small changes can make a big difference to household efficiency and comfort.

Visitors can explore practical solutions and gain expert insights across key topics, including:

  • Insulation and airtightness

  • Ventilation and moisture control

  • Low-carbon heating and renewable energy

  • Affordable energy-saving upgrades

  • Planning permission and building regulations

  • Funding and retrofit grants

Built in Collaboration with Industry Leaders

Developed with support from leading sustainable construction experts, the Retrofit Zone brings together headline sponsors and partners including:
Cupa Pizarras, Eco Design Consultants, Ecological Building Systems, Norrsken, Northcot Brick, Nu-Heat, PRB Systems Limited, Roseview Windows, as well as organisations such as AECB, The Green Register, and the Centre for Sustainable Energy.

Championing Greener Homes

Sarah Gibson MP, who is also an architect, said at the launch:

“Making our existing homes greener and more energy efficient is something I’m deeply passionate about.
If we are serious about reaching net zero, we must help homeowners cut energy use, lower bills, and make homes warmer.
I am honoured to open the new Retrofit Zone — an excellent addition to the National Self Build & Renovation Centre, whose focus on sustainable building is second to none.”

The initiative is supported by Wiltshire Council and the Business Fit for Growth programme. Speaking at the event, Cllr Helen Belcher OBE emphasised the importance of retrofitting existing homes to meet local and national sustainability goals.

Harvey Fremlin, Managing Director at the NSBRC, added:

“Four in five of the homes we’ll live in by 2050 already exist.
Upgrading what we have is essential — but it can be confusing.
The Retrofit Zone makes it simple, practical, and inspiring. Visitors can see what works, talk to experts, and leave feeling confident about taking action.”
