In response to discussions held by Sir Robert Buckland MP with the Home Office, Afghan evacuees currently accommodated at the Marriott Hotel in Swindon will soon be relocated, marking a positive development for the situation.
Following the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan in August 2021, a considerable number of refugees found temporary shelter at the hotel in Pipers Way under the supervision of the Home Office.
Sir Robert Buckland MP has been pressing for a resolution to the situation, urging the Home Office to establish a comprehensive and sustainable plan for the evacuees.
Consequently, the Home Office has announced new initiatives and secured additional funding to expedite the resettlement process for Afghan nationals, including those residing in Swindon. These measures aim to provide them with a sense of security and stability, enabling them to rebuild their lives successfully.
As part of the new plan, increased funding will be allocated to local councils, including Swindon Borough Council, to enhance the level of support available at the community level. This funding will facilitate the provision of essential services and resources necessary for the well-being and integration of the evacuees into their new surroundings.
Sir Robert Buckland MP said: “Many Afghans made an invaluable contribution to the British Military and our international partners, standing by the UK to uphold democratic values. They have fled genuine persecution, and righty came here through safe and legal routes.
“This new plan and the new funding will help to take the pressure off local councils, including Swindon Borough Council, and reduce the use of hotels that do not offer suitable long-term accommodation and have added pressure on local communities.
“I am pleased with the level of engagement there has been with me on this important and sensitive matter.”
