‘Accident waiting to happen’ as drivers ignore no entry sign in Rodbourne street

A Swindon road has been labelled an “accident waiting to happen” as motorists are “ignoring one-way signs” with police and the council both unwilling to act.

According to local residents, it seems to be a regular occurrence for motorists to drive in the wrong direction through the one-way section of Linslade Street in Rodbourne with no action taken despite the potential for 3 penalty points on their license and a fine of £100.

Upon approaching from the Groves Street end of the road, instead of taking the left-hand turn into Guppy Street drivers continue straight ahead either parking up facing the wrong way or continuing on past Rons Stores pulling out onto oncoming traffic on Rodbourne Road.

We spoke to one driver who we witnessed ignoring the signs and parking up. facing the wrong way, who said he knew it was a one-way street however ‘it’s not like it’s a busy road, so what does it matter?”

Jim Robbins, Labour leader and Councillor for the Mannington & Western Ward of Swindon Borough Council said: “I’ve pushed for cameras on the junction and improved signage for some time and sent through many pictures of cars going the wrong way to the Council over my years as a Councillor.
“The Council and Police haven’t seen this as a priority, but should the Labour group take control of the council following the elections, we will take action and get the highways team to do a proper review of the junction and determine the best enforcement methods to make sure that we reduce the number of people ignoring the signs and driving the wrong way.”

One resident, whose house overlooks the one-way street, said: “This is an accident waiting to happen.

“It is being used as a shortcut because the drivers cannot be bothered to take that tiny little detour around Guppy Street.

“Cars are going down there all day, every day.”

Other residents we spoke with say they have been sending pictures and videos of the offending vehicles to the police who take no action and that by highlighting the cars driving the wrong way down the street they would hope Swindon Police followed in the footsteps of the Wootton Basset force and started taking enforcement action against those contravening the rules.

We reached out to both Swindon Borough Council and Wiltshire Police and are yet to receive a response.
