The head of NHS England, Sir Simon Stevens, has confirmed to MPs on the public accounts committee today that a quarter of all Covid-19 hospital admissions are patients aged 55 and under.
Sir Simon Stevens said the virus was spreading out of control across much of the country, with worrying consequences for hospitals.
“In London one in 30 people has the coronavirus, in [some] parts of London it may be twice that number.
“Merseyside in just the last week there has seen a further 50% increase in the number of Covid hospitalisations,” he said.
“It’s worth remembering that this affects all ages – a quarter of the Covid admissions to hospital right now are for people aged under 55.”
This comment comes as Matt Hancock, Health Secretary confirmed today the 40% of the over 80 age group have received at least the first dose of Covid-19 vaccination.
