A motorist has been sentenced after being caught driving at 126mph on the M4

Edward Payne, aged 44, from Stanway Close, Swindon pleaded guilty to driving at excessive speed at Swindon Magistrates Court on Friday.

PC Steve Hughes was conducting speed checks on the westbound stretch of the motorway on Sunday 9 May 2020, when a white Mitsubishi Evo passed him at an excessive speed; the display on the speed detection device read 126mph.

PC Hughes pursued the Evo in his marked car and stopped the driver at junction 15 where he asked him to accompany him to the nearby Badbury weighbridge.  However, the motorist then sped off.  A cross-check of the driver’s details meant that PC Hughes could visit Payne’s home address where he was served with a penalty notice.

Payne was disqualified from driving for 56 days, fined £590 and ordered to pay costs of more than £300.

Following the sentencing, PC Steve Hughes said,  “This driver not only put the lives of other road users in danger that day but also that of his own.

“Excessive speeds like this can so easily lead to a serious collision with often fatal consequences.

“I hope this fine and ban allows this man time to think about his actions so he never makes the same misjudged mistake again.”
