Wiltshire Police is opening recruitment today (Monday 1 October 2018) for 20 new Contact Centre Operators. The Force is looking for people who like to work under pressure in a fast paced environment, taking 999 and non-emergency 101 calls from the public at its 24/7 Crime & Communications Centre in Devizes

Call handling for the police is not something anyone can do; its a challenging job  needing exceptional people who can rise to a challenge, stay calm under pressure and use their initiative.

A police call handler is the cornerstone in communication between the police and the general public. It’s a demanding job, but can be extremely rewarding, dealing with calls ranging from neighbourhood disputes and knife crime, to life-threatening emergencies. No two days are the same.

Wiltshire Police call handlers play a crucial role in frontline response for members of the public, handling 380,000 emergency and non-emergency calls a year.

The Force is looking for individuals who enjoy talking, listening and empathising with people. No previous experience is necessary; students will be trained to an exceptionally high standard to handle large volumes of telephone calls, obtain and record accurate information, assess the situation and level of police response and deploy officers as quickly as possible.

Call Centre Operators are trained to handle both 999 calls in the incident control centre and 101 calls in the  crime recording bureau.  Working in Incident Control is about taking control of the situation, answering 999 calls and managing police resources to incidents.  The Crime Recording and Incident Bureau is the first point of contact for victims and witnesses of crime reported on 101.

Many who start in the Crime and Communications Centre go onto other roles and different careers in the police service.  Common sense, attention to detail, good communications skills and a calm head under pressure are needed.  Initial salary is £18,441 – £19,467, rising to £21,600-£22,548 after 12 months probation. Additional payment for working unsocial, weekend or irregular hours is available.

Applicants must complete the first stage eligibility check by 5 pm, Sunday 14 October 2018.  Those successful will be contacted by email with details of the next stage, including taking a proficiency test at Devizes.   Apply online at https://www.wiltshire.police.uk/article/1120/Contact-Centre
