£16 Million Thames Water Upgrade to Close Swindon’s Key Cycle Route

In a bid to enhance its sewage network, Thames Water is embarking on a £16 million upgrade project that will have a notable impact on a vital cycling route connecting North Swindon with Rodbourne.

The upgrade will see the National Cycle Route 45 close for twelve months with cyclists needing to take alternate routes.

Thames Water’s works entail a complete replacement of the Haydon End rising main, extending across its entire length. This overhaul aims to prevent future bursts and make sure it’s fit to flow for years to come.

Constructed during 1995-96, the Haydon End sewage pumping station and rising main were initially designed to facilitate the transfer of sewage to the inlet works situated at the eastern end of the Swindon sewage treatment facility. Over the years, the catchment area has undergone significant expansion.

In recent times, the main has experienced a series of bursts, with their frequency appearing to escalate. A recent investigative study, prompted by the sporadic nature of these bursts, concluded that a comprehensive replacement of the main was needed.

Thames Water will carry out our work in two sections:

  1. The first section involves the segment from the Haydon End sewage pumping station to the northern side of the railway track. This phase will see the creation of a tunnel to mitigate the potential impact on the local environment.
  2. The second section will encompass an open-cut installation, tracing the path of the former railway line, now transformed into a footpath and cycle route (route 45). This segment will cross the River Ray near Barnfield Road, with an underwater drilling operation beneath the watercourse and existing properties leading to Barnfield Road. The final open-cut section will connect to the sewage treatment works.

During the upgrade period, National Cycle Route 45, a well-known cycling pathway, will remain closed with the projected completion date set for 8th July 2024.

Following the completion of the upgrade, Swindon Borough Council has arranged for Thames Water to ensure the reinstatibg of the route, so it’s in a better condition for both cyclists and pedestrians.

For cyclists seeking alternative routes during the closure, a suggested diversion is available. For those heading into town, this entails veering left into Chicory Close and then the road to the top, where you join Akers Way. Use the Akers Way cycle path to head east all the way to Cheney Manor Road.

There you can turn right and follow this quiet street through to the main road. If you do not wish to cycle on the main road, push your bike on the pavement – this is only a short stretch. Turn right onto the main road and at The Manor pub, take the next left (Bessemer Road). Follow this right onto Surrey Road all the way to Ferndale Road. Cross Ferndale Road and head down the alley onto the green space.

The path on the right will link you onto the Western Flyer, which you can follow back to Westmead.

For those venturing towards West Swindon, Thamesdown Drive can be crossed to access the former Purton Road, which provides a route to Peatmoor. Multiple route options are available for those navigating West Swindon based on their destinations.
