Police took to the roads of Swindon on New Year’s Eve on the lookout for speeding motorists are were not left short of a driver to speak with.
A total of eleven drivers were stopped in Toothill, on Wanborough Road, Great Western Way, Queens Drive, Dorcan Way, Mill Lane/Foxham Way, the B4192 Liddington and Roughmoor Way.
Drivers were given words of advice about low-level speeding and other issues such as the visibility of a windscreen which was obscured by ice.
One motorist was given a fixed penalty notice for driving at 39mph in a 30mph zone (Wanborough Road), while nine were reported to court for speeding offences, having been caught driving at over 40mph.
Another was reported to court after being stopped driving over 40mph in a 30mph zone (Bruce Street Bridges on Great Western Way). When officers stopped that car they also realised that it was being driven by someone with a provisional licence who, although they did have a licenced driver supervising them and also did not have their learner plates on display.
Sergeant Rich Tottle, from Swindon Community Policing (Team 5), said: “We know that speeding and other road traffic offences are a concern for people living in Swindon, so we targeted this operation in areas which had been highlighted by the local community and colleagues from the relevant Neighbourhood Teams.
“Speeding not only causes a nuisance, particularly in residential areas, but is also a real danger, and we want people to know that we are committed to keeping our town’s roads safe.
“Please, watch your speed – make sure you are aware of the speed limit and stick to it. It is there for a reason.”
