A proper night out in Bristol deserves a proper meal to go with it, and ahead of a visit to the Bristol Hippodrome, a table at Pasture turned out to be an excellent decision.
Pasture has a reputation, and it doesn’t take long to understand why. The atmosphere strikes that ideal balance — relaxed but still feeling like somewhere special. It’s the sort of place where you can settle in, enjoy the experience, and know you’re in for a good meal.
To start, a couple of dishes were ordered for us both to share — and what a way to begin. The short rib croquettes, served with a gochujang aioli, were packed with flavour and had just the right crispness on the outside. Alongside that, the char siu pork belly came with puffed crackling, competition-style BBQ sauce and sauerkraut — a brilliant mix of textures and flavours, with the richness of the pork cut through nicely.
Then came the main event.
One of the nice touches at Pasture is the blackboard at the top of the stairs, showing exactly what cuts are available on the day. It adds a bit of theatre to the whole experience and makes the choice feel that little bit more special. On this occasion, the decision was easy — a 500g Châteaubriand.
Described as the prized cut from the fillet, it absolutely lived up to that billing. Exceptionally tender, beautifully cooked and full of flavour, it’s the kind of dish that reminds you why simple, high-quality ingredients done well are hard to beat. While there are plenty of other options on offer — from tomahawk and porterhouse to rump, fillet, ribeye, T-bone and sirloin — it’s hard to imagine making a better choice.
Service throughout the evening was spot on, and Eleanor deserves a special mention. Despite only being there a month, she was knowledgeable, friendly and an absolute pleasure to deal with. Everything felt easy — from ordering to pacing — and that makes a huge difference to the overall experience.
As for dessert… there simply wasn’t room. And with an eye on the clock ahead of The Greatest Showman, it was probably for the best anyway.
Pasture delivers exactly what it promises — outstanding steak, great atmosphere and genuinely excellent service.
An amazing meal and the perfect way to kick off a night in Bristol.
