Arts centre supports mental health with screening of ‘Steve’

Swindon Theatres is thrilled to be continuing their support of Men’s Mental Health Swindon.  This September, Ben Akers’ life-changing documentary, Steve, will be screened to audiences at Swindon Arts Centre, with the opportunity for a Q&A with the maker and positive chats about how all men can help themselves to good mental health, to conclude the evening.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK. 12 men a day. 1 every 2 hours.

One of those men was Steve Yates. But Steve was more than a number; he was a father, a son, a brother, and a friend. He was Director Ben Akers’s childhood best friend. In this 90 minute documentary, Ben goes on a mission to look at why this is happening.

Your Holiday Starts Now

In this confronting and raw film, the film-makers want to help men (and their families) understand that it’s ok to not be ok, and discuss the ways we can all help ourselves to be mentally fit. Ultimately, this is a film of hope, trying to push us all on from Mental Health Awareness to Mental Health Action.

Charlie Paradise,Co-founder of Men’s Mental Health Swindon, said,”We are really pleased to be working with Ben and able to show case his amazing work on this topic. The documentary is about positive action in memory of someone important to so many people. We want more men to see this and help normalize the conversation about mental health – we all have it, we all need to look after it.”

Ben Akers, director and Steve’s childhood friend, said “We’ve been touring the film up and down the country and it’s fantastic to bring the film to Swindon. It’s not a typical documentary – in fact it’s been described as a “Changementary”- a film to help people change the way they look at their mental fitness.  Its ultimate job is to help men help themselves before they become ill. With my goal to save the next Steve, we concluded each screening with an open and frank discussion about mental health, helping to remove the stigma.”

‘Steve’ will be screened at the Art Centre Swindon on Thursday 12thSeptember 2019 at 7:30pm with all money raised will going towards Men’s Mental Health Swindon. Book tickets today through swindontheatres.co.uk or by calling the Ticket Office on 01793 524 481.
