You have to admire the work rate of someone who, in their solo career alone, has made it to their eleventh album. But, as we all know, it isn’t about quantity; it is about quality, and we are, as always, in safe hands with Stephen Jacques.
His ability to ebb and flow between scorching rock tracks and understated folk numbers, pop-aware accessibility and darker moods, and do it all through deft and finely wrought songs laced with wit and wisdom, is a rare skill set to have, especially in the modern age.
The fantastic Dreams on Fire kicks us off with a mid-paced and reflective piece, whilst the current single, Slept On A Ridge, delivers the rock vibes, albeit ones with the control and consideration of a seasoned player. Between this, there are understated sentiments and restrained playing, as well as alternative anthems and declarations of love. And all the while, the Atlantic waves can be heard gently crashing in the distance, the inspiration and energy behind everything here.
