There are some films you go to see, and others you feel you ought to.
Next month in Swindon, a one-night screening falls firmly into the latter category. The Voice of Hind Rajab will be shown on Monday 18 May at Swindon Arts Centre, offering audiences a chance to engage with a story that is as difficult as it is important.
The film centres on the death of six-year-old Hind Rajab, killed in Gaza City in January 2024 alongside members of her family and two paramedics from the Palestinian Red Crescent who had come to help. What sets this documentary apart—and what has drawn international attention—is its use of real audio recordings, including Hind’s own voice from phone calls made during the incident.
It’s a detail that has left a lasting impression on audiences. At the Venice Film Festival, the film reportedly received a 23-minute standing ovation—an unusual response, and one that speaks less to spectacle than to impact.
The Swindon screening is being hosted in collaboration with Create Studios, and organisers are keen to make the event as accessible as possible. Tickets have been set at £3, a deliberately modest price aimed at encouraging a wider audience to attend.
But the evening is intended to be more than just a screening. A representative from the British Red Cross will introduce the film, providing context before it begins, and there will be an opportunity afterwards for discussion—something that feels almost necessary given the subject matter.
There will also be the option to donate to the British Red Cross Gaza appeal on the night, linking the film’s message with practical support for those currently affected.
Events like this can be difficult to categorise. They sit somewhere between cinema and public forum, between storytelling and witness. They don’t offer easy answers, nor do they pretend to.
What they do offer, at the very least, is the chance to pause, to listen, and perhaps to understand something that might otherwise feel distant.
Tickets are available via the Arts Centre box office.
