Improvised murder mystery set to steal the show at Town Gardens Bowl anniversary

With the 90th anniversary of Town Gardens Bowl fast approaching, attention is turning to one of the more unusual entries in the programme — a murder mystery where even the cast are largely in the dark.

On 3 May, theatre company Pinch Punch brings Locomotive for Murder: The Improvised Whodunnit to the Bowl, promising an evening that will be made up on the spot — quite literally.

The premise is simple enough. Four passengers board a train. Before long, something goes badly wrong. From there, it’s up to a so-called world-famous detective — and the audience — to untangle a web of suspicion, half-truths and red herrings.

What sets this apart is how little is fixed in advance. Audience suggestions shape everything from the setting to the characters, and only one performer knows who the killer is before the final reveal. The rest must work it out in real time, alongside the crowd.

It’s a format that invites chaos, but also sharp thinking. Previous runs have earned strong notices, including praise for its quick-witted performances and the sheer nerve of pulling off a coherent plot without a script.

The show forms part of a wider celebration marking nine decades of the Bowl, a much-loved outdoor venue that has hosted everything from band concerts to community events over the years. The anniversary programme also includes a free performance by the Mid-West Big Band on 4 May, with further announcements expected.

Organisers say interest is already building, with tickets moving steadily as the date draws closer. Given the one-off nature of the performance — no two shows are ever the same — it’s not hard to see the appeal.

Running at around 90 minutes and suitable for ages 10 and above, the production offers something a little different from the usual run of events: part theatre, part puzzle, and entirely unpredictable.

As for how it all ends? That, it seems, is anyone’s guess.
