Swindon’s Town Gardens Bowl is preparing for a weekend of laughter, music and open-air entertainment as two very different performances take to the stage in one of the town’s most picturesque settings.
The popular venue will welcome audiences for a mix of improvised theatre and live music, offering something for fans of comedy, drama and classic British songwriting.
The weekend begins on Friday, 12 June, when ShakeItUp Theatre brings its acclaimed Improvised Shakespeare Show to Swindon.
Unlike a traditional production, no one – including the cast – knows exactly what will happen when the performance begins.
Using audience suggestions and the language and style of William Shakespeare, the performers create an entirely original Shakespearean play live on stage. Audience members are invited to help shape the evening by choosing the genre of the story and even suggesting lines of dialogue that the actors must somehow weave into the action.
The result is a fast-moving blend of comedy, drama and unexpected twists, with no two performances ever the same.
Since its launch in 2018, ShakeItUp Theatre has created more than 100 improvised Shakespearean productions, performing across the UK and overseas. The company has appeared at venues including Minack Theatre and the world-famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe, earning a reputation for combining theatrical skill with quick-thinking comedy.
Music takes centre stage on Saturday, 13 June, with a performance from The Kate Bush Experience, a tribute production celebrating the work of one of Britain’s most distinctive and influential artists.
With live appearances by Kate Bush famously rare, the show offers audiences an opportunity to hear many of her best-known songs performed live by a talented band of professional musicians.
Fronted by vocalist Maria Ahearn, the production recreates the atmosphere and musical style associated with Bush’s iconic recordings.
Fans can expect to hear favourites including Wuthering Heights, Running Up That Hill, Cloudbusting and Babooshka, alongside album tracks that have become firm favourites among long-time followers of the singer’s work.
The two performances reflect the variety of events regularly staged at the Town Gardens Bowl, which has become a popular destination for outdoor entertainment during the summer months.
