A classic murder mystery made famous by legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock is set to thrill audiences in Swindon this summer when Dial M for Murder arrives at the Wyvern Theatre.
The acclaimed psychological thriller by Frederick Knott will be staged at the theatre from July 21 to 25 as part of a new national tour produced by Phil&Ben Productions.
First performed in the 1950s, Dial M for Murder has remained one of the most celebrated suspense dramas in British theatre. The story follows former tennis player Tony Wendice and his wealthy wife Margot, whose seemingly perfect marriage hides darker secrets. When Tony attempts to carry out what he believes is the perfect murder, a chain of unexpected events creates a tense web of deception, betrayal and intrigue.
The production is directed by Josh Mathieson and features a cast led by Tanya-Loretta Dee as Margot Wendice and Pete Ashmore as Tony Wendice.
They are joined by Simon Pothecary as Max Halliday, Katy Dean as Inspector Hubbard and Phil Stewart as Captain Lesgate.
Producers say the company combines experienced touring performers with emerging talent, aiming to deliver a fresh interpretation of the much-loved thriller while preserving the tension and sophistication that have made it a favourite with audiences for decades.
The tour also marks the beginning of a new partnership between Phil&Ben Productions and PW Productions, with both organisations seeking to strengthen the future of touring drama across towns and smaller cities.
The collaboration comes at a time when many regional theatres have faced increasing challenges in attracting large-scale touring productions. The companies say they hope the partnership will help create a more sustainable model for bringing high-quality drama to venues outside major metropolitan centres.
Speaking about the initiative, the producers behind Phil&Ben Productions said they believe there remains strong demand for live drama in communities across the country and that audiences deserve regular access to major touring productions.
They described Dial M for Murder not only as an exciting theatrical event but also as part of a broader effort to support the long-term future of mid-scale touring theatre and strengthen relationships between producers, venues and audiences.
Representatives from PW Productions echoed those sentiments, highlighting the financial pressures many venues face when programming drama and expressing hopes that the partnership can help reduce risk while encouraging audience growth.
For theatre-goers in Swindon, the production offers the chance to see one of the most enduring thrillers in theatrical history performed live at the town’s principal venue.
The play’s enduring popularity owes much to its intricate plot, memorable characters and edge-of-the-seat suspense, qualities that helped inspire Hitchcock’s famous film adaptation and have continued to captivate audiences for generations.
With a week-long run planned at the Wyvern Theatre, organisers are expecting strong interest from local audiences eager to experience the classic whodunnit on stage.
