Swindon’s creative community is being invited to get hands-on with a wide range of artistic techniques as Material Mayhem comes to Mulberry Gardens later this month.
Taking place on Friday, 24 July, the latest Open Studios event will bring together artists, photographers and makers for an afternoon and evening celebrating creativity in all its forms.
Running from 2pm until 7pm at Mulberry Gardens, 225 Whitworth Road, Swindon, the free event offers visitors the chance to experiment with different materials, discover new techniques and meet local creatives.
Among those taking part is artist Zozo Thomas, who will be transforming the potting shed into a creative workshop where visitors can try everything from coloured pencils and charcoal to acrylic paints and alcohol inks.
Joining her will be local watercolour artist Stuart Malaure, who will demonstrate the techniques behind his work, including wet-on-wet and wet-on-damp painting, while explaining how he captures texture and atmosphere in his landscapes.
Photography enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy, with members of Cricklade Camera Club on hand to discuss both digital and traditional photography. The friendly club welcomes photographers of all abilities and regularly competes in regional competitions while encouraging new members to get involved.
Representing the world of model making and 3D printing will be Mark and Anna Enright, better known as Podpadstudios’ Master Maker and Mrs Breaker. Visitors can learn about the different materials used to create props and models, while meeting one of the event’s biggest attractions — Tiffany, a giant Hunter-Killer robot. Guests will be challenged to guess just how many different materials were used in her construction.
Although admission is free, donations towards the upkeep of Mulberry Gardens will be welcomed. A range of artwork, handmade gifts and crafts will also be available to purchase.
Organisers recommend booking in advance to help manage visitor numbers. Parking at the venue is limited to disabled visitors, with guests encouraged to walk, use public transport or park considerately nearby.
