Swindon Town have this afternoon announced the signing of defender Will Wright on a permanent deal, subject to EFL approval.
The Luton-born centre-back brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record, having played for various clubs across different leagues.
Wright began his footballing journey in non-league before making a significant move to Colchester United in 2018. His time at Colchester was followed by a spell in the National League with Dagenham & Redbridge, where he made over 150 appearances. His consistent performances earned him a return to the EFL with Gillingham in June 2022. During the 2022-23 season, Wright featured in nearly 50 matches for the Gills, scoring twice and providing five assists.
The versatile defender enjoyed a standout campaign with Crawley Town in the 2023-24 season, playing a crucial role in their promotion to League One via the play-offs. Wright made 45 appearances in the regular season, contributing four goals and nine assists. His efforts were pivotal in Crawley’s success, particularly in the play-off semi-finals against MK Dons and the final against Crewe, where he played the full match in their 2-0 victory.
Now, at 27, Wright embarks on a new chapter with Swindon Town, turning down a new deal with Crawley to join the Wiltshire club. He expressed his excitement, saying, “I’m buzzing, now it’s all done and all real. I’m ready to get going and get my teeth into pre-season. The club speaks for itself and it’s such a big club at this level, and even at the league above as well. I think the next move after last season’s success was a big one for myself, so coming here with the project and the ambition they’re setting out, it just felt right.”
Jamie Russell, Head of Football at Town, also shared his enthusiasm about the signing: “We are delighted that Will has joined us from now-League One Crawley, as there was a lot of competition for Will’s signature and we are thrilled that he is joining us for the 2024/25 season.
“Will played over 40 League Two games last season and more importantly, gained promotion which is a key area of our recruitment this summer and can be shown with this signing but also Ollie Clarke at the start of this summer transfer window. He not only offers defensive solidity with a promotion-winning mindset, but also he is a threat when attacking too, which can be shown by the number of goal involvements he had in Crawley’s season last campaign, and we’re really looking forward to seeing him in a Swindon Town shirt soon.”
Will Wright becomes Swindon Town’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window.
