Swindon Town have this evening announced the loan signing of defender Miguel Freckleton from Championship side Sheffield United, subject to EFL approval.
The versatile left-sided defender, who can play at central defence or left-back, joins Town at an exciting point in his career, following a series of promising loan spells in the National League.
Freckleton has been a part of Sheffield United’s youth system since 2021, embarking on his first loan stint with Wealdstone in November 2022. During his time with the Stones, the young defender made 14 appearances, earning plaudits for his standout performance against Wrexham, where he helped secure a clean sheet on his debut. His time with Wealdstone also saw him score his first professional goal in a 2-1 victory over York City.
Sheffield United recalled Freckleton three months into his Wealdstone loan, only to send him to Yeovil Town for the remainder of the 2022-23 season. At Yeovil, he continued to impress with eight appearances. His next move took him to Chesterfield for the 2023-24 season, where he played a pivotal role in their promotion campaign, making 16 appearances.
At just 20 years old, Freckleton has accumulated a wealth of experience, with nearly 50 appearances in the National League and cup competitions. His arrival at Swindon Town is expected to add significant defensive solidity as the team prepares for the 2024-25 League Two campaign.
Jamie Russell, Swindon’s Head of Football, expressed his excitement about the signing: “We are really pleased to have Miguel with us at Swindon. He is an exciting defensive prospect, and we are looking forward to working with him this season. Miguel has shown great maturity in playing a variety of defensive positions, particularly last year at Chesterfield. His experience and attributes fit well with our system, and we believe he is ready for the step up into the EFL.”
Russell added, “Miguel is not only defensively astute but also quick and athletic, excelling in one-on-one situations. His ability to play in a back three or four is crucial to our plans this season. In possession, he brings quality and confidence, helping the team play through the thirds and adding competition to our defensive unit.”
