Swindon Town have today announced the signing of former Volendam defender George Cox on a one-year deal, subject to EFL approval. Cox, who began his career at Brighton & Hove Albion, returns to England after a successful five-year stint in the Netherlands, predominantly in the Dutch Eredivisie.
The 26-year-old left-back, known for his attacking flair, first moved away from Brighton on loan to Northampton Town during the 2018-19 season, making five appearances. However, it was his subsequent loan move to Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands that truly shaped his career. After impressing in his initial season with 23 appearances, Cox made the move permanent and went on to enjoy five productive seasons, tallying 131 Eredivisie appearances, scoring eight goals, and contributing nine assists.
In the 2023-24 season, Cox joined Volendam in the Eerste Divisie, where he continued to display his versatility and attacking prowess, making over 20 appearances and adding an assist to his record. Now, Cox returns to his homeland with a wealth of top-tier Dutch football experience and is eager to make his mark in English football once more.
Expressing his enthusiasm about joining Swindon Town, Cox said: “I’m delighted to be back in England and looking forward to getting back into the rhythm of English football. My time in the Netherlands has broadened my understanding of the game, and I’m keen to apply that experience here. As an attacking left-back, I’ve always focused on delivering quality crosses and contributing to goals and assists.”
Jamie Russell, Swindon Town’s Head of Football, also shared his excitement about the signing: “George is a player we’ve been keen on, and we believe he will bring an exciting, dynamic edge to our left-hand side. His experience in the Dutch top-tier speaks volumes, and we’re looking forward to helping him reach new heights in his career during the upcoming season.”
