Six-man Swindon defied the odds on the road once more to earn a battling point in a 48-42 defeat at Belle Vue.
Robins had kept pace with their much-fancied hosts before back-to-back Aces maximums had the them 10 in arrears with five races to go but top guns Jason Doyle and Nick Morris stemmed the tide with an impressive 5-1 in heat 13.
Grand Prix star Doyle held off fellow Aussie Max Fricke, enabling Morris to cruise into second before resisting the tenacious charge of Craig Cook. Flying Frenchman David Bellego then claimed his second win of the night to ensure parity in the penultimate race before that man Doyle bagged his fourth chequered flag to give Swindon, short of Bradley Wilson-Dean through injury, a useful yield following the previous night’s home defeat to King’s Lynn.
“All things considered it was a good point, especially on the back of last night’s performance,” said team boss Alun Rossiter.
“We were a bit unlucky with a couple of 5-1s, there was a mistake with one of the mechanics in David (Bellego)’s race which cost us a bit but we couldn’t be too critical.
“I don’t think anybody gave us a chance coming here so it was a good return.”
Three home defeats in the Premiership have at least been offset by Swindon taking something from each of their four away days so far.
Asked whether he fancied hitting the road every week, Rossiter added: “Everybody is saying that at the moment, even the local journalists are saying we cannot buy a win at home but we are doing well on the road.
Hopefully, we can take confidence from that. ”We will be alright. It is just a matter of tweaking things in the right places. Once we do that, we’ll get there.”
