Russell’s Grand Final satisfaction

Swindon Robins Speedway Chairman Terry Russell says their appearance in tonight’s Premiership Grand Final is one in the eye for their early-season critics.

Robins face reigning champions Wolverhampton in the first leg at the Abbey Stadium (7.30) with the return in the West Midlands on Wednesday.

The Carpets4Less Robins finished top of the table and brushed aside Poole in their semi-final to set up tonight’s tasty showdown.

And that’s despite fans, writers and pundits predicting a season of misery when they announced their line-up last winter.

“Who would have thought it?” said Russell. “We were written off by all the so-called experts at the start of the season and, I firmly believe, the mood around the club was seriously influenced by this.

“Our crowds were poor early on and that was a consequence, in my opinion, of people believing we had no chance of any success this year.

“Yes, it was hard to juggle the numbers and still include Jason Doyle on his hugely inflated average, but we stood by our agreement with him – and here he is, 22-points (maximum) away from becoming World Champion.

“The management and certain individuals took a lot of criticism at the start of the season but as a collective we always felt that we were just one signing away from being an extremely good side.”

Russell has written an interesting column for tonight’s special souvenir programme which will be on sale from the usual outlets on entry to the stadium for £4.
