Swindon Town Football Club announced this afternoon that Joel McGregor has signed his first professional contract with the club.
The 18-year-old defender, who has been with Swindon’s Academy since 2018, has had a standout season, leading to this significant milestone in his footballing career.
McGregor has been a key player for the Academy this season, contributing to an impressive eight-game unbeaten run in the Youth Alliance League and playing a crucial role in the side’s journey to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup. Joining the Academy as an Under-12, McGregor progressed through the ranks, featuring over 30 times in all competitions last season. His contributions included ten goals, with a hat-trick against Portsmouth, and five assists.
His performances did not go unnoticed. McGregor earned several places on the first-team bench before making his league debut against Sutton United in April. He finished the season strongly with three starts and two appearances off the bench for the senior side, adding to his earlier appearance in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy fixture in 2023.
Upon signing his first professional contract, McGregor expressed his joy: “It’s a dream come true to be able to call myself a professional footballer, and honestly, I couldn’t be happier. It’s been an incredible season with my teammates, from our progression into the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup to our unbeaten run in the league and my league debut against Sutton, start against Walsall, and home debut against Morecambe. I can’t wait for next season and to get back out playing football in front of the fans. I want to say a massive thank you to everybody who has supported me on this journey.”
Academy Manager Alex Pike said: “Everyone in the Academy is extremely proud of Joel, from the staff that work closely with him daily to those who have guided him in many other capacities. His hard work and dedication make him a role model for all boys within the Academy, from the youngest age groups through to the current scholars. Congratulations, Joel.”
Lead Professional Development Phase Coach Sean Wood added: “Joel has worked so hard this season and fully deserves this opportunity to continue his journey at Swindon Town Football Club. He started his journey with us at Under-12s and now continues with our first team. Joel’s performances in the FA Youth Cup were at a very high level against top young international wingers, showing he can cope, adapt, and thrive in 1v1 situations and now within the first team. A few changes to his game this season have really helped him showcase his qualities in front of our fans, and long may that continue.”
Head of Football Jamie Russell concluded: “It has been a privilege to observe Joel’s development on and off the pitch over the past three years. The dedication and effort demonstrated by Joel, as well as our staff, have not gone unnoticed. Witnessing Joel make his starting league debut against Walsall was a moment of immense pride for the entire staff, Joel himself, and his family.”
