Swindon Town’s promising right-back, Joel McGregor, has signed a new contract with the club, keeping the 19-year-old at the County Ground for the foreseeable future.
McGregor, who inked his first professional deal only last year, has quickly won the hearts of supporters and manager Ian Holloway alike. His performances on the pitch have been impressive, prompting the club to offer him an extended contract to reflect his growing influence in the squad.
Born in Bristol, Joel enjoyed a breakthrough season in professional football, delivering several standout displays that earned him multiple Player of the Match awards. He also notched his first professional goal in the Vertu Motors Trophy against Bristol Rovers, before following it up with his first league goal in a competitive fixture against Cheltenham Town.
Off the field, Joel has been equally commendable, engaging with the community through various initiatives, including appearances at the Junior Reds Room and recently delivering a talk to parents at the Academy’s Under-9s introduction evening — a testament to his maturity and commitment.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, McGregor said: “I’m just buzzing, to be honest. It’s an absolute honour to continue to play for this club in the coming years. The support has been nothing short of magnificent. I’m really excited to continue my journey and just looking forward to next season.”
He also praised the impact of Ian Holloway on both himself and the club: “The manager has had a huge effect on all the players and the energy around the club this year. Everyone is really positive about the future, and getting the chance to learn under him for the next few years played a big part in me signing my contract extension.”
Joel added, “The fans are a massive part of Swindon and always will be. For me, I always try to play to the best of my ability and work as hard as I can because that’s what the fans deserve to see. Anything less isn’t the standard for Swindon. We all know that next year we look to give them something they can cheer about.”
