Swindonian Jordan Smith issues a call for the town’s youth to get out today and vote!
This election is unlike anything we have seen for generations.
Casting our votes today will determine our future, not just for the next 5 years but for decades to come.
Issues ranging from university tuition fees and maintenance grants to Mental Health services and how Britain forms our new relationship with Europe and the rest of the world will all be determined by this week’s result so it’s crucial that we get out and take part in shaping Britain’s future.
For years, young people have bared the brunt of harsh economic times. Austerity has ushered in Sure Start centre and library closures which were fundamental in helping young parents across Swindon.
Students have seen the price of education continue to increase whilst the quality of employment opportunities has continued to decline.
Apprenticeships on below minimum wage (a meagre £3.50 per hour) and the insecurity of zero hours contracts devalue the input of young people into our economy and society.
If you’re unhappy with the way things have been going for you, then you absolutely have to go and vote for the change you need.
Brexit: it’s all politicians have spoken about for the past year yet all of the mainstream political parties have failed us by being unable to propose a solid Brexit strategy that addresses the concerns of young voters and which promotes our best interests.
Frankly, though, no deal is a bad deal because it quite simply leaves us with no trade links with Europe. This would be an utter disaster for both industry and youth employment.
This is why we have to look at what the parties are offering us in the other key areas of our lives because there are no guarantees about what Brexit will actually mean for us.
So I urge all young people in Swindon to look at all the options and think “who best represents me”?
Go out and vote for our future.
Go out and vote for the party that gives you the hope you need for stronger public services, a stable economy and a new, refreshing leadership with our true interests at its heart.
