Young carers across Swindon have unleashed their creativity in a poster competition, revealing the super-powers they dream of possessing.
Organised by the Swindon Carers Centre to coincide with Young Carers Action Day on March 13th, the competition invited primary-age young carers to illustrate the super-powers they would choose to assist them in their caring responsibilities.
Entries flooded in, each offering a glimpse into the unique challenges faced by young carers. From “mind reading, so I know when my sister needs help” to “spring legs, so that I can run fast if someone needs help,” the artwork not only showcased imaginative ideas but also highlighted the resilience and empathy of these young individuals.
Debbie Murphy-Myers, Head of Service Delivery for Young Carers and Parent Carers at Swindon Carers Centre, commended the participants for their creativity and enthusiasm. “We received many fantastic entries from young carers, aged five to ten years, all showcasing the super-power they would choose,” she said.
Recognising the difficulty in selecting a single winner, the Centre opted to reward each participating school with a voucher for their Young Carers Group, acknowledging the collective effort and spirit behind the submissions.
The poster competition served as a platform for young carers to express themselves and bond over shared experiences. One participant from Oliver Tomkins School expressed, “I like art and art about young carers is even better,” highlighting the importance of representation and self-expression. Another from Southfield Junior School echoed this sentiment, relishing the opportunity to collaborate with peers and explore creative outlets during lunchtime Young Carers Club sessions.
The theme of super-powers resonates deeply with the young carers community, symbolising their unwavering strength and resilience in the face of adversity. It also ties into the Superheroes film produced by Swindon Carers Centre in collaboration with Light-up Media, offering a visual narrative of young carers’ journeys and aspirations.
As the nation commemorates Young Carers Action Day under the theme of “Fair Futures For Young Carers,” Swindon Carers Centre continues its mission to advocate for the well-being and rights of young carers.
