Young Carers Action Day 2025: “Give Me A Break” Highlights the Need for Rest and Respite

Young carers across Swindon are being given a voice through a poignant short film, “Give Me A Break,” produced by Swindon Carers Centre in collaboration with Light Up Media. Released to mark Young Carers Action Day 2025, the film highlights the struggles of young carers and the vital importance of providing them with time to rest and recharge.

Many young carers experience isolation due to their responsibilities, with little opportunity to take a break from the challenges of daily life. Swindon Carers Centre, part of the Carers Trust network and affiliated with Carers UK, continues to work tirelessly to offer support, organising activities and trips that allow these young individuals to step away from their roles and enjoy much-needed downtime.

The impact of these activities is profound. One young carer shared, “Attending made me feel happy, happy because the show was funny, and I got to spend time away just for me.” Another commented, “Just having time to myself and not worrying about my brother.” Others echoed similar feelings, stating, “I can be myself and not have any worries,” and “Made me feel happy that I spent time being a kid.”

Your Holiday Starts Now

With increasing numbers of unpaid carers in Swindon, the need for awareness and support has never been greater. According to the 2021 Census, there were 18,315 unpaid carers of all ages in the borough, with a rise in those providing care for longer hours each week. Those caring for between 20 and 49 hours a week increased from 1.4% to 1.8%, while those offering care for 50+ hours a week grew from 2.5% to 2.6%.

Young Carers Action Day is an annual event led by Carers Trust, shining a light on the experiences of young carers across the country. This year’s theme underscores the fundamental need for rest and respite—something that many young carers simply do not have the luxury to experience.

Swindon Carers Centre remains committed to ensuring these young individuals receive the recognition and support they deserve. By offering spaces where they can relax and enjoy moments of normalcy, the charity continues to make a meaningful difference in their lives.
