Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance Charity becomes accredited ALS training centre

Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance Charity has reached a major milestone after becoming an officially accredited Resuscitation Council UK course centre, following the successful delivery of its first Advanced Life Support (ALS) course.

The two-day course was held in December 2025 and marked the culmination of more than a year of detailed planning, preparation and external assessment. Its success means the charity is now formally recognised to deliver and assess ALS training on an ongoing basis.

ALS is the Resuscitation Council UK’s longest-running course and has been used to train healthcare professionals for more than 25 years. The programme is built around evidence-based guidelines and focuses on both the technical and leadership skills required in high-pressure emergency situations.

The course equips candidates to recognise and manage deteriorating patients using a structured ABCDE approach, deliver standardised adult CPR, lead and work within multidisciplinary teams during cardiac arrests, and develop strong non-technical skills such as communication, decision-making and leadership.

Designed primarily for medics and healthcare professionals working in hospital and pre-hospital settings, ALS is often a mandatory requirement for certain roles, though some candidates attend as part of their continuing professional development.

Six candidates successfully completed the December course, passing a demanding programme that tested both clinical knowledge and practical skills. The assessment included realistic simulations, a written examination and a final scenario-based evaluation.

Adam Khan, a critical care paramedic with the charity who hosted the training, said the achievement reflected a collective effort across the organisation.

“The course wouldn’t have been such a success without our dedicated faculty,” he said. “They are all doctors and specialist paramedics from the charity who gave their time to ensure everything ran smoothly. The course was also externally quality assured by a regional representative from the Resuscitation Council UK.

“I’m pleased to say we have now been formally signed off as a training and assessment centre, and we’ll be running ALS courses regularly throughout the year.”

Mr Khan added that the new accreditation will also provide an important additional income stream.

“The ALS course will generate valuable revenue for the charity,” he said. “That will help us maintain our simulation suite and training equipment, while continuing to support the vital lifesaving work delivered by the wider team.”
