A major new community sports hub in Wichelstowe has taken a significant step forward, with support from the Wiltshire FA and a strong show of public interest following a recent consultation.
The Wichelstowe Community Sports Hub – set to be developed between Middle and East Wichel – promises to become a vital asset for Swindon residents, offering a mix of sporting opportunities, community spaces and green leisure areas.

Backed by funds secured through Section 106 contributions from developers and future grant applications, the project has been designed with the whole community in mind. Its scope extends far beyond football, although demand for the sport was particularly high in the survey that attracted close to 400 responses.
The scheme, being delivered by Swindon Borough Council with input from Wroughton Parish Council, will include multi-use games areas (MUGAs), a skate park, play zones for children, a “learn to cycle” area, and a welcoming community pavilion with a café, meeting rooms, and high-quality changing facilities.
The Wiltshire FA has been confirmed as the preferred operator of the site – a decision warmly welcomed by local councillors and residents alike. Their operational experience and connections within the footballing community are expected to help drive the long-term success of the hub.
A Place for All
While football has dominated the headlines, the broader ambition is clear: to create a space that encourages everyone – from Sunday league players to weekend walkers – to get moving and make use of the green corridors that wind through Wichelstowe. The plans acknowledge how many people already use the canal paths for walking, running and cycling, and the aim is to enhance these opportunities with a more formal hub space for local groups and clubs to meet and grow.
Voices of Support
Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, Councillor Kevin Small, shared his optimism about the scheme, saying: “We’ve had fantastic input from the local community, and that feedback has helped shape the detailed designs. The Wiltshire FA has been brilliant, and together with Wroughton Parish Council, we’re developing something the community can truly be proud of.”

Simon Russell, Chief Executive Officer of the Wiltshire FA, was equally enthusiastic: “This project represents more than just football – it’s about supporting people to become more active and involved in their communities. The chance to run this hub directly allows us to engage with local people in a more meaningful way.”
Councillor John Hewer, Chair of Wroughton Parish Council, added: “We’re thrilled to be involved. After seeing what the Wiltshire FA has achieved at their base in Devizes, we’re excited to bring something equally special to Wichelstowe. The mix of sport, play, and social spaces reflects exactly what people asked for during consultation.”
Residents can expect a final opportunity to review the revised plans in July before they are formally submitted for planning approval. If all goes to plan, construction could begin in 2026.
With a combination of strong local backing, expert partnership, and community-focused design, the Wichelstowe Community Sports Hub looks set to become a landmark facility for generations to come.
