What a Difference 10 Months Make! Longleat’s Amur Tiger Cubs Thriving in Wiltshire

Visitors to Longleat Safari Park are in for a treat as Yana, one of the park’s six rare Amur tigers, proudly watches over her four growing cubs. The young tigers—Dora-Boo, Ginger Biscuit, Heidi, and Seeka—were born in May last year and are now full of energy, frequently seen playing on logs and exploring their surroundings in the paddock.

The litter is Yana’s second with dad Red, and unlike their older siblings, who have moved on to other wildlife centres as part of the European breeding programme, these four females are staying together a little longer. Darren Beasley, Head of Animal Operations at Longleat, described their arrival as “fantastic for the breeding programme and our guests.”

“With four females, we’ve been able to keep them together longer with their mother, giving visitors an incredible opportunity to witness this rare species up close,” he explained.

The importance of Longleat’s role in conservation cannot be overstated. Amur tigers are among the rarest big cats on the planet, with only around 450 left in the wild. Longleat’s breeding efforts contribute significantly to the survival of this critically endangered species, ensuring a future for generations to come.

“Yana is an exceptional mother,” Darren added. “She’s teaching them essential life skills, from hunting techniques to self-protection. But like all youngsters, they also love to play—whether it’s tumbling on the grass or splashing in their pool!”

The cubs’ playful antics have become a major attraction for safari-goers, who can spot them as they drive through the Wiltshire park. Yana remains ever-watchful, guiding and protecting them as they grow in confidence and strength.

As a special treat for Mother’s Day weekend, Longleat is offering free entry for mums on 29–30 March with the online code MUM25. A perfect opportunity to celebrate the remarkable bond between mothers—both human and tiger alike!
