In a study conducted by Xpatfone, a leading UK virtual phone number provider, significant cost savings and career advancements have been identified for UK students who choose to study at European universities.
The research compares the financial burden of UK university tuition fees to those in Europe and highlights the top European institutions excelling in producing business leaders.

According to the study, UK students could save an average of £6,000 per year on tuition fees by opting to study in Europe. The data, drawn from TopUniversities, shows that the average annual cost of studying in major European countries is just over £3,000, a stark contrast to the £9,000 average in the UK. Switzerland emerges as the most affordable option, with courses starting at an impressive £690 per year. Even Norway, the most expensive country on the list, offers courses starting at £5,900, still significantly cheaper than the UK.
This substantial cost disparity has not gone unnoticed. UNESCO statistics reveal that approximately 40,000 UK students choose to study abroad each year, drawn by the financial benefits and the opportunity for a global education.
Xpatfone’s research goes beyond cost analysis, delving into the career trajectories of alumni from Europe’s top universities. By analysing LinkedIn profiles of graduates from the top 106 European universities offering English-speaking courses, the study found that nearly 300,000 alumni have ascended to roles as CEOs or Managing Directors since 2000. Specifically, 4.22% of the 7,078,063 alumni studied have reached these top executive positions.
Leading the charge is Copenhagen Business School in Denmark, with an impressive 12.51% of its alumni achieving CEO or Managing Director status. Despite its joint 93rd ranking by The Times Higher Education, the school’s success in cultivating leaders underscores a notable discrepancy between academic rankings and professional outcomes.
Swiss universities also demonstrate strong performance. Institutions such as the University of Lausanne, University of Basel, and Università della Svizzera italiana are prominently featured in the top five for producing business leaders, alongside offering some of the lowest tuition fees in Europe. Conversely, highly ranked academic institutions like the University Paris-Saclay in France, which ranks 9th by The Times Higher Education, show a divergence in their influence on business leadership, ranking 105th in Xpatfone’s survey.
The findings of this study present a compelling case for UK students to consider European universities. The financial incentive of saving £6,000 annually coupled with the proven track record of European institutions in producing business leaders offers a promising alternative to the rising costs of UK education.
