Threshold releases moving short film as new figures highlight scale of homelessness in Swindon

A Swindon homelessness charity has released a powerful short film to shine a light on the human stories behind the town’s growing crisis.

Threshold, which has been supporting people in Swindon for more than half a century, has launched Jacob’s Story – a seven-minute dramatisation based on the real experiences of a former resident. Produced by Create Studios and starring Wiltshire actor Tom McMillan, the film explores trauma, stigma, addiction and mental health, offering an insight into the realities faced by nearly 1,000 people locally without a secure home.

The release comes against a backdrop of rising homelessness in the town. New figures show that the number of rough sleepers has increased by 50% in just two years, with Swindon now ranking in the highest third of local authorities in England for homelessness rates. Children are among those affected, with the number of homeless children rising by a quarter in a single year.

Threshold warns that people experiencing homelessness are among the most vulnerable in society. Rates of mental and physical illness are high, while isolation and stigma often prevent access to already stretched local services. People without stable housing are nine times more likely to complete suicide than those in secure accommodation, and many die at an average age of just 44.

Rachel Harris, Communications Manager at Threshold, said: “Jacob’s story reveals the devastating impact of homelessness on people in our community. Many of our residents tell us that stigma and exclusion can spiral their already desperate situations into total hopelessness.

“We hope the film will inspire compassion and support for people like Jacob, who could be any one of our friends, colleagues, family members, children – even ourselves.”

The charity’s mission is to end homelessness in Swindon by offering safe accommodation, tailored support and a pathway to independence. Evidence shows that with the right help at the right time, people can turn their lives around. Threshold’s website also shares residents’ stories alongside information about local services for those facing housing insecurity.

The film was created through Create Studios’ BFI-funded Create Traction programme, giving young people skills and training for careers in film and television.
