Popular Wichelstowe Canal Path to Be Resurfaced Thanks to New Funding

A well-used section of the Wichelstowe canal towpath is set to undergo a long-overdue upgrade, thanks to a £3,000 donation from Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes South West.

The 100-metre stretch, which runs from the edge of the Wichelstowe development through to Beavans Bridge, has been a key route for walkers, joggers and local schoolchildren for over two decades.

Originally rebuilt by the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust (WBCT) as part of a millennium project, the path has suffered from years of wear and tear, regularly turning into a muddy, waterlogged mess in winter – making it difficult for the community to use safely.

With the funding now secured, WBCT can move forward with plans to resurface and widen the path, ensuring it remains accessible year-round.

Chloe Ford, Swindon Branch Chair and Head of Communications for WBCT, said: “We established a temporary works compound near the site last year, which allowed us to store materials and machinery ready for this project. Now, with funding secured, we can finally get the work underway, improving access for the community and allowing more people to enjoy this scenic route.”

Work is expected to begin soon, with completion aimed for before summer. The new surface will bring the towpath in line with other recently improved paths around the Wichelstowe development, creating a safer and more pleasant experience for those using the route.

Chloe added: “2024 was an extremely difficult year, and 2025 looks set to be just as challenging. Donations like this are hugely important in helping us maintain and improve access to the canal, ensuring the local community can continue to benefit from this free and peaceful green space.”

To allow the work to be completed, the towpath will be closed temporarily, with a diversion via Peglars Way to Beavans Bridge in place. Signage will be installed to direct pedestrians during the closure.

The towpath improvement forms part of the wider Wichelstowe development, which is being built by Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes in partnership with Swindon Borough Council. Once completed, Wichelstowe will deliver 3,000 new homes, new schools, and community facilities over a 20-year period. The 250-hectare site will also feature 12km of nature trails, 200 acres of open space, play areas, and allotments.
