The coin was made even rarer during WWI, as the British government requested that the public hand their sovereigns in to be melted down to help finance the war effort. In return, those who handed in their coins were given banknotes.

Currently, one of the coins is up for auction on eBay for £2,500, which while lower than the estimated value, is still an impressive sum for a £1 coin.

If you happen to have a 1926 George V sovereign in your collection, check for the “S” mintmark, which denotes the Sydney Mint in Australia – you could be sitting on a small fortune!
