“This incident has changed our lives” as driver admits careless driving after injuring two children

A Swindon man has pleaded guilty to careless driving after running a red light and seriously injuring two young children at a pedestrian crossing.

Harold Small, 89, of Corsham Road, Penhill, admitted the offence at Swindon Crown Court on Tuesday (7 January).

The court heard that on 11 December 2023, two six-year-old schoolchildren were crossing Beechcroft Road using a traffic light-controlled pedestrian crossing when Small drove through a red light and struck them.

Both children were injured in the collision. One suffered a fractured arm, while the other sustained cuts and bruises.

The emotional impact on the families was laid bare in victim statements read to the court. The mother of one of the boys said the collision had altered every aspect of their lives.

“This incident has changed our lives,” she said. “I wouldn’t wish the effects it has had on us on my worst enemy.”

The mother of the other child described the moment as life-altering, telling the court: “The boys stepped into the road and my whole life changed.”

Detective Constable Alex Way, from Wiltshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Team, said the case served as a sobering reminder for all road users.

“I know this incident has had a lasting effect on everyone involved, both physically and emotionally,” he said. “I am pleased that this outcome brings some justice for the families and may help prevent further harm.

“This case underlines the importance of paying close attention when driving, particularly near schools and pedestrian crossings where young children are present.”

Small is due to be sentenced at Swindon Crown Court on 16 February.
