Swindonians are invited to join the Friends of Lydiard Park on Tuesday, 16th April 2024, at 7:00 pm at the Lydiard Hotel and Conference Centre for a captivating journey into history.
Military historian and author Christopher Jary will be joined by Lydiard Friends’ Chair, Sarah Finch-Crisp, to unveil the remarkable wartime story of Vernon St. John.
In the gripping narrative of ‘The Viscount who Fought as a Tommy,’ Christopher Jary will delve into Vernon St. John’s courageous journey, tracing his footsteps through the treacherous battlegrounds of World War I. From the harrowing trenches of Passchendaele to the brutal encounters of the German spring offensive on the Somme in 1918, Vernon’s tale encapsulates the resilience and sacrifice of a generation.
At the heart of this presentation lies the personal narrative of Vernon St. John, a young lord whose life took an unexpected turn from the lavish celebrations of his coming of age at Lydiard Park to the unforgiving landscapes of war-torn France. Enduring the horrors of battle, Vernon paid a steep price with his health, ultimately being evacuated from the battlefield and discharged from the Army on 6th November 1918 due to shell shock.
Drawing upon Christopher Jary’s expertise and an array of archival materials from The Lydiard Archives, this event promises to offer a compelling insight into the experiences of British infantry during World War I. From poignant photographs to authentic documents, attendees will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the social history of the era.
Ticket prices for the event include a complimentary glass of wine or a soft drink for those who prefer. Additionally, the hotel bar will be open throughout the evening, providing a relaxed setting for further discussion and reflection.
