Take a Big Step for the NHS: Join the Challenge This October

Swindon residents are being urged to lace up their trainers and step up for a great cause this October by joining NHS Charities Together’s ‘The Big Step’. This annual event encourages participants to walk 5,000 or 10,000 steps daily throughout the month, raising much-needed funds to support the NHS and its staff, patients, and communities.

With public support for the NHS at an all-time high, a recent poll revealed that 83% of people recognise the importance of taking responsibility for their health. However, only a third are actively contributing through fundraising or volunteering. That’s where ‘The Big Step’ comes in – offering a simple, healthy way for everyone to get involved while directly supporting NHS Charities Together.

Participants can take part at their own pace, walking either 5,000 or 10,000 steps a day for the entire month. Funds raised will help the NHS provide additional support for patients and staff, improving their facilities and wellbeing. It’s also a great way for individuals to boost their own physical and mental health. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or just starting your journey, ‘The Big Step’ is an opportunity to form healthy habits while contributing to a cause that touches us all.

Your Holiday Starts Now

Louise Stribling, a Swindon resident who benefitted from NHS support after a life-changing injury, shared her story to encourage others to join the challenge. After suffering a severe spinal injury, Louise used a specialised rehabilitation treadmill funded by NHS Charities Together to aid her recovery. Now able to walk short distances around her home, Louise said, “The NHS has been there every step of the way, and I’m so grateful. Taking part in ‘The Big Step’ is a way to give back and help others receive the same life-changing support.”

The initiative isn’t just for those recovering from illness or injury. It’s also for anyone looking to improve their fitness, reduce stress, and support a worthy cause. Whether you’re aiming to walk around your neighbourhood or challenge yourself with longer distances, every step you take will help raise funds for NHS Charities Together.

With no minimum fundraising target, participants can join for free, and everyone who reaches £50 will receive a special medal, while those raising £100 or more will earn a ‘Big Step’ t-shirt. Sign-ups are now open at www.bigstep.co.uk, so why not put your best foot forward this October?
