Two of Swindon’s most devoted volunteers have been recognised as ‘hidden heroes’ for their selfless commitment to supporting some of the town’s most vulnerable residents.
Angela Proctor and Jim McCloud, both stalwarts of Big Breakfast Plus, were nominated by the charity for the national Room to Reward programme, which gifts hotel breaks to outstanding volunteers as a heartfelt thank you for their efforts. Both Angela and Jim will now enjoy a well-deserved UK getaway, joined by their respective partners, John and Doreen.
Based at the Pilgrim Centre in Regent Street, Big Breakfast Plus serves up cooked breakfasts every single day to those facing homelessness or food insecurity. It’s more than just a meal – it’s a space of warmth, dignity and human kindness.
Charlotte Mannion, who recently stepped down as Chair of Trustees, praised the tireless duo for their dedication and compassion.
“Angela goes above and beyond,” she said. “From taking home washing to managing challenging situations with grace, she never falters. She’s calm, compassionate, and sets the tone for the entire service.”
Jim, the charity’s longest-serving volunteer, is equally admired. “Guests and volunteers alike hold him in high regard,” said Charlotte. “He brings humour, understanding, and genuine care to everything he does.”
As if one accolade wasn’t enough, Angela and Jim were also chosen to accept The King’s Award for Voluntary Service on behalf of the charity. Presented by Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire Sarah Troughton, the award is the highest honour a voluntary group can receive in the UK – equivalent to an MBE.
For Jim, the double recognition was a surprise. “I didn’t expect it at all,” he admitted. “There are plenty who do more than I do. But it’s nice to be appreciated – I’m not used to getting certificates at my age!”
Angela, who has volunteered for three years, echoed his sentiment. “It’s lovely to be acknowledged, especially alongside Jim. I get so much out of volunteering – it’s something I’m truly passionate about, and my family have noticed how good it is for me too.”
