Swindon’s GEL Studios Unveils ‘Next Gen’ Initiative to Nurture Local Creative Talent

Swindon’s GEL Studios has proudly launched its innovative Next Gen programme, designed to provide meaningful, hands-on experience to young people keen to break into the creative industries.

The Next Gen scheme marks a significant shift from the occasional, short-term placements the agency once offered. Now, it stands as a dedicated, structured opportunity that allows students to step into the shoes of marketing and design professionals. Rather than spending their time on mundane tasks or simply observing from the sidelines, young people are invited to immerse themselves in creative thinking and real-world project delivery from the outset.

Through partnerships with a growing number of local educational institutions, including Bradon Forest School, Nova Hreod Academy, Cirencester College, and New College Swindon, GEL Studios ensures that every placement is packed with genuine, practical experience. Each student’s time at the agency is tailored to their interests, whether that means sampling both marketing and design or delving deeply into one of these vibrant fields.

Recently, Year 10 students Ryan and Lauren from Nova Hreod Academy joined the GEL Studios team for an inspiring work experience placement. Tasked with crafting a fictional promotional campaign for a new Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavour inspired by the upcoming Superman film, they developed an imaginative concept dubbed the “Big Blue Scoop Scout”. This clever play on Superman’s iconic “Big Blue Boy Scout” nickname was brought to life through meticulous audience research, detailed persona creation, engaging content, and a comprehensive social campaign plan.

Beth Wakefield, Creative Strategist and Work Experience Lead at GEL Studios, expressed how rewarding it was to see Ryan and Lauren embrace the creative process: “Their enthusiasm and originality reminded us how vital it is to give young people a place where they can experiment, learn, and build their confidence.”

The Next Gen initiative sits at the heart of GEL Studios’ commitment to creating work that leaves a positive impact. By opening its doors to Swindon’s next wave of talent, the agency is not only offering opportunities but also helping to remove the barriers that often prevent young people from accessing the creative sector.

Graeme Leighfield, Founder of GEL Studios, added: “Next Gen isn’t simply about providing placements; it’s about giving young people a real platform to discover and develop their creative passions. We are thrilled to play a part in shaping Swindon’s future creative stars.”

With more placements planned and collaborations with schools and colleges continuing to expand, GEL Studios looks set to remain at the forefront of championing the town’s next generation of creative thinkers.
