Swindon’s Eastcott Vets Name New MRI ‘Scanuel L Jackson’ After Social Media Poll

In a light-hearted nod to Hollywood, Eastcott Veterinary Referrals in Swindon has unveiled a state-of-the-art MRI scanner with a memorable twist. Following a social media poll, the hospital’s newest addition has been given the fitting name ‘Scanuel L Jackson’, inspired by the iconic actor Samuel L Jackson.

The Linnaeus-owned veterinary hospital’s team ran a friendly vote to name their advanced MR5300 1.5T MRI scanner, sparking plenty of creative suggestions. While names like ‘Robert DeNeuro’, ‘Scannie Mac’, and ‘Barry Scanilow’ all vied for attention, it was Scanuel L Jackson that stole the show among staff votes, earning almost half the ballots cast.

Hospital Director Niki Burton explained: “This is actually the second time we’ve gone for a playful name for our equipment. Back in 2021, our first 1.5T MRI scanner was affectionately called ‘MRI-ah Carey’ by our team, and it’s been a hard act to follow. But thanks to our team’s creativity and the involvement of our clients, Scanuel L Jackson is another classic.”

Burton also highlighted the scanner’s pivotal role in improving patient care: “Beyond the fun, Scanuel offers exceptional image quality, which is vital for detailed neurological investigations of the brain and spinal cord, as well as examining joints and soft tissues. This makes a significant difference in our ability to provide a broad spectrum of high-quality treatment options.”

The MR5300 scanner’s benefits extend beyond image quality, showcasing a major leap in sustainability. Using innovative BlueSeal magnet technology, this advanced equipment requires just seven litres of liquid helium for cooling, a stark contrast to the 1,500 litres typically used by MRI scanners with conventional magnets.

Burton noted: “This represents a substantial environmental advancement, reducing the need for this scarce resource while maintaining high-quality imaging capabilities.”

The addition of the new scanner reinforces Eastcott Veterinary Referrals’ expertise in a wide range of specialities, including cardiology, dentistry, internal medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, and various surgical fields. The centre also boasts its own emergency care department to support pets when they need it most.
