Swindon’s curry scene has just received an exciting new addition with the opening of New Spice Kitchen at Wessex Court, and last night’s tasting event left no doubt that this is a place worth visiting. From the moment we arrived, the aromas promised something special—and the food did not disappoint.
Standout dishes included the Beef Haleem, a hearty stew of lentils, wheat and shredded meat, slow-cooked with warming spices. Rarely seen on Swindon menus, this dish was executed perfectly, delivering rich, comforting flavours. Haleem has roots stretching back centuries to the Middle East, with variations across Iran, Turkey, and the Arab world, before becoming a staple in South Asian cuisine. Traditionally prepared during Ramadan and other special occasions, it was designed to nourish the body during long fasting hours. In South Asia, particularly Hyderabad and Karachi, Haleem has evolved into a celebratory dish, characterised by its complex spice profile and filling, porridge-like texture—now a rare treat for Swindon diners.
Equally impressive was the Nihari, a lamb curry braised overnight with a careful balance of spices, offering a deep, layered taste that lingered on the palate. Nihari originated in the Indian subcontinent during the Mughal era as a breakfast dish for the working class. Its name comes from the Arabic word “nahar”, meaning morning, reflecting its early-morning consumption. Historically slow-cooked in large cauldrons over low heat, the meat would tenderise while the flavours melded, becoming a signature dish in cities like Delhi, Lucknow, and Karachi.
The menu also features a variety of Kahari dishes alongside their take on the classic Chicken Tikka Masala, each bite demonstrating the kitchen’s skill at delivering authentic, satisfying curries.
New Spice Kitchen caters for eat-in, takeout, and delivery through the usual apps, with prices that make indulging in a proper curry all the easier. Bold flavours, generous portions, and a welcoming setting make this a promising new destination for anyone craving South Asian cuisine in the heart of Swindon.
