Swindon’s Adult Learning Courses Rated ‘Good’ in Latest Ofsted Report

Swindon Borough Council’s Adult Community Learning services have once again been rated ‘Good’ following a recent Ofsted inspection, with particular praise for the welcoming and supportive learning environment.

The latest report confirms the outcome of the previous inspection in 2020, which also rated the service as ‘Good’ with an ‘Outstanding’ result for Behaviour, Attitudes, and Personal Development.

The Adult Community Learning programme currently enrols over 500 eligible learners each year across 40 locations in Swindon. The courses aim to develop key skills such as Maths and English while also improving wellbeing, supporting employment prospects, and helping parents assist their children’s learning. Practical courses, including English for speakers of other languages and digital skills, are also part of the offering.

In its report, Ofsted commended the Council, stating: “Tutors create welcoming and caring learning environments. This contributes towards learners building their confidence and being able to do more in society.” The report also highlighted that managers “have developed a curriculum offer that is inclusive and designed well to widen participation in education.”

The positive impact of these courses is clear, with 100% of learners reporting increased confidence, 98% saying their mental health had improved, and 98% stating they had become more ambitious for themselves or their families. The report also noted that most learners successfully complete their courses, with 95% achieving their learning goal this academic year.

Among the wide range of courses offered is a cooking course aimed at helping adults prepare balanced, healthy meals. Jordan, a recent participant, shared his experience:
“I have found the cooking courses really great. I was referred to the courses by the Council’s Live Well Team, and being here has helped me and my family to eat healthier. It’s also helped me get out of the house, as I had bad social anxiety, but I’ve been able to make new friends.”

The Council now plans to build on this success by offering additional training for tutors and introducing more advanced courses to meet learner demand.

Councillor Adorabelle Amaral-Shaikh, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “I am proud that our Adult Community Learning team have been recognised for the consistently good services they deliver to residents across Swindon. It is never too late in life to learn new skills, and this Ofsted result reflects the hard work of our tutors and learners.”

“These courses provide our residents with opportunities to gain qualifications, improve their health and wellbeing, and develop new skills like upcycling and healthy cooking. My thanks go to the team for their dedication, and we will continue to develop this service to help residents become more independent and confident.”
