Children across Swindon are being given the chance to let their imaginations run wild – with the winning idea set to become a real-life playground.
David Wilson Redrow South West, currently building at Badbury Park on Homington Avenue, has launched its Junior Playmakers competition. Open to children aged 7–14 in Swindon and across the country, it invites entrants to draw their dream inclusive play area – one designed so children of all abilities can enjoy it.
The competition, which closes on Friday 5 September, is more than just a creative challenge. The winning design will be turned into a fully built play space as part of the housebuilder’s pledge to create 100 new inclusive playgrounds each year.
Winners will also receive up to £500 in vouchers to spend on play equipment and will work alongside professional planners to help shape the final design. From sensory boards to swings, slides to sports areas, the aim is to create a vibrant hub where fun is open to everyone.
The initiative follows research commissioned by David Wilson Redrow, which surveyed more than 2,000 parents nationwide. It found that half of parents with children who have disabilities feel their youngsters are excluded from playgrounds due to poor accessibility, while nearly two thirds say their children play outside less than they did themselves at the same age.
