Swindon Unites for Palestine: Charity Dinner Raises £3,000 and Sparks Solidarity

This past Saturday, Swindonians came together at the Swindon Palestine Solidarity’s charity dinner, an event aimed at raising funds for Medical Aid Palestine.

Over 150 guests and 30 dedicated volunteers participated in an emotionally charged evening, listening intently, as Ahmed Alnaouq, a Palestinian journalist and the guest speaker, shared his heartbreaking personal experience.

Ahmed revealed that over 21 of his family members were tragically killed in Gaza during recent bombardments. Accompanied by his new bride, who also endured the loss of many family members and friends, Ahmed’s powerful narrative underscored the ongoing hardships faced by the people of Gaza.

Ahmed, co-founder of “We Are Not Numbers,” an organisation providing English-language writing workshops for young Palestinians in Gaza since 2015, recounted the devastating loss of his 23-year-old brother, Ayman, during the Israeli military attack in 2014. Inspired by the need to honour his brother and countless other unnamed victims, Ahmed initiated “We Are Not Numbers” to share the stories of young Palestinians. Today, the organisation boasts over 350 writers contributing their narratives.

The Swindon community, representing diverse ages, religions, and races, gathered to listen, express solidarity with Gaza, and contribute to the cause. The event wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of local businesses and individuals, including Biblop, Ruchi, Jully, DuDuzo Kitchen, Lalbagh, Pizza and Co, Tandoori Nights, Shupe, Grand Bazaar, The Jewel in the Crown, Kaspars, and members of the Turkish and Muslim communities. Their contributions, ranging from food and decorations to time and money, helped raise over £3,000.

Ahmed expressed his gratitude, stating, “I felt like I was surrounded by family. The event was very powerful, and the spirit of the people I found there was very high and motivating. It gives me hope that as long as we have people like you who continue to participate in events and protests for Palestine, Palestine eventually will be free.”

Swindon Palestine Solidarity plans to sustain the momentum by organising future events, rallies, film shows, fundraisers, and marches in Swindon. They also encourage participation in national demonstrations in London. The community is invited to join the next local march on Sunday, 11th February at 12 pm in Regents Circus, and the national march in London on 17th February.
